Latest ETFO Updates

April 18, 2024 - Occasional Teachers with the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) have scheduled a strike vote for April 18, 2024. Since December 2023, the Board has been engaged in local bargaining with ETFO Occasional Teachers. It is important to note that strike votes are just one step in the collective bargaining process and do not necessarily mean that occasional teachers will be going on strike. The Board remains committed to the collective bargaining process in good faith, and are hopeful for a positive outcome prior to any possible strike action. We will continue to keep parents/guardians/caregivers updated through the process.  Learn more about the stages of the collective bargaining process .

2023 ETFO Updates

August 16, 2023 - The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) has announced that they will conduct central strike votes during in-person meetings being held across the province from mid-September to mid-October. It is important to note that this is just one step in the collective bargaining process and does not mean elementary teachers are going on strike. We remain hopeful that all sides (Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA), Government of Ontario and ETFO) will reach an agreement prior to any possible strike action. August 29, 2023 -  The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) has announced that they are applying for conciliation with the Minister of Labour for the central bargaining table, which covers monetary and issues of provincial concern.  Conciliation involves an application to the Ministry of Labour requesting the appointment of a conciliation officer who will meet with the parties and help them reach a settlement. At this point, ETFO has indicated they are not entering into binding arbitration, like the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF).

October 23, 2023 - The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) announced last week that its members have voted 95 per cent in favour of a strike mandate. Negotiations will continue at ETFO’s provincial bargaining table with the assistance of a provincially appointed Conciliator to assist the parties in a reaching a deal and this strike mandate does not mean that any strike action is imminent at this time. Further updates will be forthcoming from the provincial parties regarding the status of the negotiations. Learn more about the stages of the collective bargaining process.

November 21, 2023 - The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) and the Ontario government have reached a tentative deal on central terms of a collective agreement with elementary teachers and occasional teachers. The details of the agreement remain confidential until ratified by all parties.  Learn more about the  stages of the collective bargaining process.

December 19, 2023 - The members of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) have voted to ratify the 2022-2026 Teacher/Occasional Teacher Central Agreement reached with the Ontario government and the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA). The term of the four-year agreement is from September 1, 2022, to August 31, 2026. OPSBA ratification is required for the agreement to take effect and the vote is scheduled to take place this week.  Learn more about the  stages of the collective bargaining process.
