TDSB Design Guidelines

The Toronto District School Board’s Elementary and Secondary School Design Guidelines are comprehensive handbooks that govern the design of new schools, as well as renovations and additions to existing facilities. The Elementary School Design Guideline applies to schools serving students from junior kindergarten to grade 8, while the Secondary School Design Guideline covers grades 9 through 12.

These Guidelines are primarily intended for the Consultant Design Team, which includes the Architect as Prime Consultant and supporting Sub-consultants. They provide a consistent framework of approaches, standards, and critical requirements to guide the design process.

By implementing these Guidelines, the TDSB ensures that all school projects, whether new builds or upgrades, align with its commitment to creating durable, environmentally sustainable schools that foster inspiring, flexible, and adaptable learning environments for all students. The Guidelines support the Board’s educational and operational goals while enabling design teams to deliver spaces that meet the evolving needs of teaching and learning.
