Helping All Students Succeed

Creating Equitable Learning Environments for Everyone

We believe that equity of opportunity, and equity of access to our programs, services and resources are critical to the achievement of successful outcomes for all those whom we serve, and for those who serve our school system … The Board is therefore committed to ensuring that fairness, equity, and inclusion are essential principles of our school system and are integrated into all our policies, programs, operations, and practices.” -- TDSB Equity Foundation Statement

Our vision is for all students to succeed. The TDSB has taken a great stride forward to support student achievement with a renewed, strategic focus on equity. This approach focuses on classrooms, schools and local communities where real change happens for students.

What is equity.? To us, it’s providing each and every student with the conditions that support achievement and well-being. It is about supporting not only the students who are falling behind, but raising the bar for all students.

We are a diverse system with more than 240,000 students who bring a variety of experiences and perspectives. It is essential that students see themselves reflected in their schools and their learning. Along with that, we need to create learning spaces that are effective and respectful, and celebrate and honour students, their families and their communities.

This equity action plan provides us focus and ensures that the work we are doing at the system level has a direct impact in classrooms. A large part of this work is having conversations and dialogue, and understanding how bias and perspective can create – or remove – obstacles.

We are committed to this work. This plan was developed from our past experiences and work, the expertise of our staff and community partners and, most of all, from our parents who shared their ideas, perspectives and thoughts on our proposed framework. We listened to everyone and these insights will help shape the actions we take as we move forward.
