The quality of the translation will vary in some of the languages offered by Google. Google Translate is a free service and currently offers translation in over 100 languages, but does not capture all languages or dialects.

International Languages Elementary and African Heritage

In an increasingly globalized world, it is important to set our students on the path to being active global citizens. The TDSB takes great pride in providing International Languages and African Heritage programs to all students from K to Grade 8. No background knowledge is necessary and we encourage students to explore all languages.

2020/2021 Fall Program

This fall, the International Languages – Elementary / African Heritage Program will be offering language classes to students (TDSB and non TDSB) Kindergarten to Grade 8. Students will take part in a remote/at home learning. One day each week, they will have live face-to-face interactive lessons with their instructor and other students for approximately 30 minutes. Activities will be focused on building student’s abilities in oral communication, reading and writing. 

Please note that a minimum of 23 students is required to open a language class.

What International Languages Elementary/African Heritage program offers language classes to Kindergarten to Grade 8 students.  No language background knowledge is necessary.  Please note that a minimum of 23 students is required to open a language class.
Who Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 students
Where Language classes will run remotely/from home.  There is a possibility that classes may transition to a physical classroom during this school year. 
Cost Free while program is delivered remotely/from home.

Languages classes are offered one day a week.

Classes will begin as follows:

Saturday language class:  October 3, 2020

Monday language class:  October 19, 2020

Tuesday language class:  October 13, 2020

Wednesday language class:  October 14, 2020

Thursday language class:  October 15, 2020

Friday language class, October 9, 2020

Time

Classes run for 2.5 hours. Language classes are offered various times of the week.  Click here for days and times available.

Students will receive approximately 30 minutes face to face time through Google Meet.  Remaining 2 hours will be spent on independent work.

African Heritage, Albanian, American Sign Language, Amharic, Arabic, Aramaic, Armenian, Azerbaijan, Bengali, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Cantonese, Creole, Dari, Dutch, Edo, Farsi/Persian, German, Greek, Gujarati, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Karen, Korean, Kurdish, Macedonian, Mandarin Simplified, Mandarin Traditional, Mongolian, Marathi, Nepalese, Pashtu, Portuguese, Punjabi, Romanian, Russian, Sanskrit, Serbian, Shona, Sinhalese, Somali, Spanish, Swedish, Tagalog, Tamil, Telugu, Tibetan, Tigrinya, Turkish, Twi, Urdu and Vietnamese.

Registration

In order to complete online registration, you must have your child’s Ontario Education Number (OEN).  The Ontario Education Number can be found in your child’s report card. 

Parent/Guardian may choose only the same language once.  Parents may choose up to 5 different languages.  Please ensure that class times do not overlap with each other.  For example, you cannot register for Arabic on Mondays and Arabic on Tuesdays.  You can register for Arabic on Monday and Vietnamese on Tuesday.

Mandarin Traditional Registrations
We are currently experiencing technical difficulties and currently working to resolve this problem. In order to register for Mandarin Traditional, please select the school in the "location" drop down menu. Mandarin Traditional is offered at 4 locations: AY Jackson SS, Agincourt JPS, Leslieville PS, Ryerson CS, Terry Fox PS and Woodbine JHS. Please select one of these schools to register for Mandarin Traditional.
