Exemptions from Synchronous Learning

The exemption process described in Policy/Program Memorandum No. 164 ( PPM 164) continues to be in place for elementary and secondary students who are learning virtually in the 2023-2024 school year.

Exemptions are not available to students who have opted for in-person learning or home schooling. As per the Ministry of Education requirements, students must be in the province to access remote learning and be eligible for an exemption.

We expect parents/guardians/caregivers who have shared decision-making responsibilities to come to an agreement before completing the request for exemption.

Beginning Friday, September 29, individual requests for an exemption from the minimum requirements for synchronous (live, interactive) learning, can be made through an online form or by submitting a hard copy form to the home school. Requests will be reviewed and applicants will be notified in writing whether or not the request has been approved. Forms for approved exemptions will be stored in the student’s Ontario Student Record (OSR). Applicants will have an opportunity to request an exemption for a specific duration or for the entire 2023-2024 school year.

The timeline to request an exemption is Friday, September 29 to Friday, October 20, 2023 for elementary and secondary students.
