If you are concerned about your child’s mental health, your family doctor is a good place to start looking for help. A thorough physical examination can rule out any physical illnesses. If appropriate, your doctor can also refer you to a specialist (such as a child psychologist, psychological associate or child psychiatrist).
As a parent, you can help by sharing the following information about your child with your doctor or specialist:
- things your child has most difficulty with
- times of the day when your child is most affected
- settings that are most difficult for your child
- events or circumstances that happened leading up to the difficulty your child is currently experiencing.
Connecting with the school is also important any time your child is struggling with mental health, behaviour or learning problems. You should discuss both your own concerns as well as any concerns your child’s teacher may have. Sometimes, changes may need to be made in the expectations for your child at school. School staff can also help direct you to a school-based mental health professional.
