Mental health is about:
- how you feel, think, and behave
- how you cope with the ups and downs of everyday life
- how you feel about yourself and your life
- how you see yourself and your future
- how stress affects you
- how you deal with negative things that happen in your life
- your self-esteem or confidence
Feelings like sadness, worry, anger, fear and grief are natural responses to events and problems in our lives. If these feelings continue for long periods of time, become overwhelming, and get in the way of daily life, then you or your family member may need some help.
A few basics for supporting children’s good mental health:
- unconditional love from family (“I will always love you no matter what.”)
- self-confidence and high self-esteem
- the opportunity to play with other children
- encouraging teachers and supportive caretakers
- safe and secure surroundings
- appropriate guidance and discipline
Research shows that children need love and structure to develop confidence and self-esteem. Parents can show love in many different ways based on their personal and cultural background. Smiles, hugs, discussion, interest and time together are all signs of a loving relationship. Daily routines, clear rules and expectations, monitoring, and appropriate consequences give children the structure they need to develop self-control and feel a sense of security.
