The Toronto District School Board is very proud to offer the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (IBMYP) School in two of its schools.
Milne Valley Middle School (grade 6, 7, 8) is an authorized IB Middle Year Program (MYP) school since July 2008. Milne Valley offers a three-year program.
Windfields Junior High School (grades 7, 8, 9) is an authorized IB Middle Year Program (MYP) school since May 2008. Windfields offers a three-year program.
The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (MYP) has been specifically designed for adolescent students. This is an important age of transition, personal, social, physical and intellectual development. It is a time of uncertainty and questioning, of search for relevance and meaning. Adolescents are entering a phase of life where their social and cultural experiences in and outside of school have a determining impact on their perception of themselves, their self-esteem, their sense of identity and their capacity to relate to others. The MYP is devised to help students develop the knowledge, attitudes and skills they need to participate actively and responsibly in a changing and increasingly interrelated world.
The MYP aims to enable students to:
- Build upon their spirit of discovery to develop an understanding and enjoyment of the process of learning, independently and in cooperation with others
- Acquire knowledge and understanding and prepare for further learning
- Recognize the extent to which knowledge is interrelated
- Learn to communicate effectively in a variety of ways
- Develop a sense of personal and cultural identity and a respect for themselves and for others
- Acquire insights into local and global concerns affecting health, the community and the environment and develop a sense of individual and collective responsibility and citizenship.
The MYP is based on three Fundamental Concepts (Intercultural Awareness, Communication and Holistic Learning). As well, the MYP philosophy embeds five Areas of Interaction into the curriculum. The five Areas of Interaction are:
- Approaches to Learning - the development of effective study skills and the fostering of the learning process.
- Environments - the interdependence of humans and nature.
- Human Ingenuity - the creative and inventive genius of humans and their impact on society.
- Health and Social Education - mental and physical health
- Community and Service - the development of an altruistic attitude.
There are no specific entrance requirements for students to attend an IB MYP school except students must live in the catchment area. If students do not live within the catchment area, an Optional Attendance application can be submitted. Please contact the IB MYP Coordinator at the school for more details.
