The TDSB strives to design outdoor play spaces to meet the developmental needs of our youngest students. These are spaces created using a collaborative approach to support inquiry and play-based learning. Features include considerations for shade and accessibility, as well as functional design elements allowing for multiple uses (e.g. storage, pathways, areas for open-ended and active play).
In 2013, the TDSB, in partnership with Evergreen, published a design guide for Early Years and Kindergarten Play-Learning Environments which provides guidelines for creating environments where children can connect with nature.
Reviewing the viability of a Kindergarten project is the first step for schools to receive approval, guidance, and support to plan, create, and maintain these outdoor projects. This is facilitated through the Viability Review meeting process.
