Entry to Trades for Employers

The Entry to Trades program offers pre-apprenticeship training for individuals who are out of school and currently unemployed, and who are interested in pursuing careers in the skilled trades. Training is available in the following trades: Cook, General Carpenter, and Hairstylist.

 

What Employers Gain from Partnering with Entry to Trades

  • Access to trained candidates for trade-related positions at no cost
  • Job development support and on-the-job coaching to enhance learning and productivity
  • An 8-week work placement opportunity aligned with your business needs
  • A pipeline of potential apprentice hires
  • In partnership with Next-Steps Employment Centre, eligible employers may access financial support through hiring grants

Participant Training Overview:

Participants in the Entry to Trades program receive hands-on pre-apprenticeship training, including:   


Cook

  • Certifications: Food Handler, Smart Serve, Worker Health and Safety Awareness, and WHMIS
  • Introduction to Level 1 apprenticeship training, including:
    • Workplace and food safety practices
    • Basic nutrition and culinary business practices
    • Fundamental food theory and culinary techniques
    • Baking theory and basic baking techniques
  • Provision of a cook toolkit, including anti-slip footwear, chef coat and pants, apron, and chef knives 

General Carpenter

  • Certifications: Working at Heights, Health and Safety, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and WHMIS
  • Introduction to Level 1 apprenticeship training, including:
    • Safety, materials, and tools
    • Plans, specifications, and building codes
    • Residential estimating, calculations, and layout
  • Provision of a carpenter toolkit, including PPE (hard hat, safety boots, vest) and essential hand tools

Hairstylist

  • Certifications: First Aid and CPR
  • Complete Level 1 Training curriculum, including:
    • Ethics, regulations, and policies
    • Health and safety
    • Entrepreneurial skills and professional development
    • Client service and preparatory procedures
    • Hair cutting, styling, colouring, lightening, and chemical treatments
  • Provision of a hairstylist toolkit, including mannequin, brushes, combs, rollers, rods, clips, and tint brushes
