The electronic translation service on the Toronto District School Board website is hosted by Google Translate, a third party service. The TDSB does not guarantee or warrant the reliability, accuracy or completeness of any translated information.

The quality of the translation will vary in some of the languages offered by Google. Google Translate is a free service and currently offers translation in over 100 languages, but does not capture all languages or dialects.

The basic translation goal is to capture the general intention of the original English material. Before you act on translated information, we encourage you to confirm any facts that are important to you or may affect any decisions you make.

The Toronto District School Board is committed to equity and community engagement, and by providing this tool, we are making our information more accessible to families whose first language is not English.

Essential Skills Upgrading

Essential Skills Upgrading (ESU) is a non-credit, adult program that helps clients improve their reading, writing, and math skills, as well as their employability and workplace skills.

The program is for individuals who:

  • Speak English
  • Want to upgrade their skills to prepare for high school, college, apprenticeship or certificate programs or employment
  • Are goal-oriented and want to gain self confidence

The program is available in many locations across the city and runs September to June, Monday to Friday on a full-time or part-time basis, during the day or in the evening.

To get started, call to attend an information session. Then, meet with an assessor to discuss your goals and needs, complete an assessment and develop a learning plan based on your goals.

This program is funded by the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development and Employment Ontario. The TDSB works with other literacy providers through the Local Literacy Council, Metro Toronto Movement for Literacy, to ensure that members of all communities have access to literacy training.
