My child has special education needs and I want my child to remain in our local school in a regular class, can I do that?

Yes, we support inclusion. If your child is entering a TDSB school and has special education needs, contact your local school as soon as possible to discuss registration and set up an appointment with the Principal. At this meeting, you will be able to share your child's needs, provide any related documentation and create an entry plan, which may include special education support.

Following registration, most students will be placed in a regular classroom at their local school.

Besides the Principal, who can help me navigate the TDSB system?

Your local school Principal should be your first point of contact and can assist you with any of your concerns. TDSB also has Special Education and Inclusion Consultants assigned to your local school that can help you navigate the system and address any of your concerns.

I heard TDSB has a Special Education Program Recommendation Committee (SEPRC) to help fast track my child into an Intensive Support Program (ISP), how do I access this?

This process is designed to support families whose child has complex medical and/or physical needs. Schools register students and they are placed in the regular classroom. If a parent(s)/guardian(s) strongly believes the child would benefit from an ISP, the parent(s)/guardian(s) request a SEPRC to the local Principal.

The SEPRC recommends whether or not an intensive support special education program (ISP) would be required for a student upon enrolment in a TDSB school. Six to nine months after the student has been in the program, an IPRC will take place to decide if a student is exceptional and if the placement in the program is appropriate to meet the child’s strengths and needs. Children in kindergarten intensive support programs will be referred to an IPRC during their senior kindergarten year, in preparation for the following year.

What if I have questions and would like to connect with other parents who have children with special education needs; what is SEAC?

TDSB has a supportive group of parents and community association representatives that make up the Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) that you can reach out to. Contact information for the current SEAC membership

SEAC, is an advisory committee legislated by the Ministry of Education and appointed by the Board of Education, to assist the board in understanding the special needs of exceptional children and youth, and to advise the board in matters that apply to the delivery of special education services and programs.
