Spring 2022

Dear Parents/Guardians/Community,

As the elected public school board trustee for our community, my role is to advocate for you and your child, and to represent the needs of all students and parents/guardians in the Toronto District School Board.

I want to extend a thank you to the TDSB Schools in Toronto Centre. Your support and patience over the past two years is greatly appreciated by me, your Trustee, by the teachers and administrators at your school and by the students who really are the reason we do what we do.

I have always had ‘your back’ from the start of this pandemic. I have advocated for more resources in our Toronto Centre schools where the need is greatest.

The Ontario Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kieran Moore has made a grave mistake in dropping the mandatory use of masks in schools. This action puts our most vulnerable students and citizens at risk. Though the Ontario population is 89% vaccinated, children below the age of five are not able to be vaccinated. Children who are between 5 -11 year old have low vaccination rates (56% with one dose and 34% have two doses). I am not the only one who disagrees with Dr. Moore. The President & CEO of The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto Dr. Ronald Cohn feels this is a premature decision on the part of the provincial government and argues that masking in schools should continue. I encourage every staff member, parent/caregiver and student to continue to wear a mask while at school for your safety and the safety of others.

The TDSB is doing everything possible to ensure the health and safety of all school community members, while also providing the best academic experience possible for students, supporting mental health and well-being and considering the needs of families and staff.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind you of the mental health and well-being support and resources
available through the TDSB website:
