On March 6, 2019, over 300 girls in Grades 7 - 12 gathered for our annual Young Women on the Move event for International Women’s Day. The theme for this year’s event was: Mirroring Me: Recognizing My Power. Each young woman had the opportunity to listen to our guest speaker, Shelley-Ann Brown, Canadian Olympic Medalist, who inspired the girls by sharing her story of channelling her inner power to achieve her goals, and then challenging them to look inward and recognize the power that they each hold to be their best-self.

The girls also participated in a variety of activities that focused on their inner power by uncovering their personal strengths and further mobilizing their innate agency. Each girl left with a personal mirror decorated with inspiring messages that they created to remind them that they are caring, confident and courageous young women, who can overcome all challenges, barriers and obstacles in their own lives. The girls were also treated to a powerful step dance by the step team from Amesbury Middle School. These young women shared their passion and commitment for expression through dance and then helped the girls create their own step dance to showcase the power that they own as young women today.

As Young Women on the Move, we are committed to working alongside all young women to expand existing learning opportunities, chart new pathways and prepare them for a successful transition into the world of work.

The event was sponsored by the Toronto District School Board and Johnson Insurance.
