What does it look like to work at the Toronto District School Board? Grade 9 students recently had a chance to find out firsthand. They spent the day meeting staff from different departments and hearing about the career journeys that brought them to the organization.
Students learned that CEO Camillo Cipriano had once worked as a restaurateur. As he shared his career journey, he showed students that professional paths don't always follow a straight line and can lead in unexpected directions.
They also discovered that two members of the Communications team, Nick and Cindy, are trained teachers. Drawing on his teaching experience, Nick led students through a branding activity, inviting them to develop their own ideas and put their creativity to work.
Students also had an opportunity to learn about careers they may not have previously considered. Alyssa from Health, Wellness and Abilities introduced them to disability case management, while Iania from Partner Resources shared insights into the field of Human Resources. Erin and Serita from the Strategic Transformation team helped students understand the bigger picture and how different areas of the organization work together.
In the afternoon, guest artist Roxane Tracey, owner of Fresh Paint Studio, brought a creative perspective to the day. She led an art activity while sharing how her passion for art developed into a thriving business.
To wrap up the experience, Amanda from the Guidance department, helped students reflect on what they had learned and consider how their interests might connect to future career opportunities.
By bringing students together with staff from across the organization, the day offered a glimpse into the many different career paths that exist at the TDSB. Most importantly, it showed students that career journeys are unique and sometimes an unexpected opportunity can be rewarding.
