Welcome to TDSB Connects, an update on news and events from across the Toronto District School Board.

Celebrating Learning – In May, we celebrated Education Week, which highlighted incredible things happening every day in our classrooms, schools and across the Toronto District School Board. Check out amazing ways students are engaged in their learning and connected to their community.

Student Interest Programs Policy – Trustees have approved the Student Interest Programs Policy which will improve access to the TDSB’s nearly 40 specialized schools and programs. This policy was developed following extensive consultation and feedback from students, parents/guardians, staff, and the broader community, as well as a review of best practices, system data, and TDSB enrollment trends. Centre of Excellence for Black Student Achievement - Join us for the virtual grand opening of the Centre of Excellence for Black Student Achievement on June 13 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Register for an evening of performances, guest speakers, a tour of the new physical space and more. Join the Conversation – Join us on May 31 for a presentation on The Insidious Nature of Antisemitism Past and Present with presenter Larry Mikulcik, National Coordinator for Fighting Antisemitism Together (FAST). Learn more about our Join the Conversation series 2022.

 

Anti-Bullying Strategies – Prevention and intervention strategies are being implemented in every school to address the serious, and negative impact of bullying on students. Some changes to our Caring and Safe Schools policies and procedures will help support student safety and well-being. Learn more about Bullying Prevention at TDSB.

 

Mental Health and Well-Being – Resources are available to help parents and caregivers support their child with grief and loss following tragic events. Learn more about Grief and Loss - helping students with Tragic events & Covid.

 

TDSBcares: Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal Extended to June 30 To date, the TDSB community has raised thousands of dollars as part of the TDSB Cares: Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal to support the Canadian Red Cross and UNICEF in their ongoing efforts to provide life-saving humanitarian assistance to those impacted by the war in Ukraine. The fundraising campaign has now been extended until the end of the school year (June 30, 2022). Learn more and find out how you can donate.

Family and Caregiver Early Literacy Guide The Family and Caregiver Early Literacy Guide provides an overview of the foundational early reading skills and essential instructional approaches and includes strategies for families and caregivers that extend, respond and honour children’s competencies in early literacy. Learn more about Family and Caregiver Early Literacy.

 

Enhanced Language Training for Newcomers to Canada Internationally educated, trained or experienced professionals new to Canada can sign up for Community Services’ free Enhanced Language Training (ELT). Receive career-specific instruction and the opportunity to gain Canadian work experience through ELT. Sign up at www.elt4employment.ca

 

Heritage Months – In May, the TDSB recognized Asian Heritage Month and Jewish Heritage Month.

 

Summer Programs – Explore various TDSB summer programs for elementary, secondary and adult learners now open for registration. Programs include:

 

Elementary: Elementary Summer School, Extended Day Program – Summer Camp, International Languages and African Heritage Language & Culture Program, Outdoor Education Summer Camp, Summer Music & Art Camps

 

Secondary: Credit Courses for e-Summer High School (online), Continuing Education Secondary Credit Summer Programs, International Leadership and Peer Support Program

 

Adult: Adult ESL Summer Program, Learn4Life General Interest Courses

 

Parents and Caregivers as Partners Conference – Mark your calendars! The TDSB’s Parent and Caregivers as Partners virtual conference is scheduled for October 22 and 23, 2022.
