Celebration was in the air as graduating students of CW Jefferys Collegiate Institute, Downsview Secondary School, Emery Collegiate Institute, and Westview Centennial Secondary School were recently feted at the fourth annual Walk with Excellence. The occasion showcases the pride, talents, and accomplishments of TDSB students and also marks the next step in an exciting journey in the lives of the community's young people.

The festivities began at CW Jefferys Collegiate where students received Walk With Excellence t-shirts, designed with a poem written by Toronto’s Poet Laureate Anne Michaels titled Further

TDSB Director of Education Dr. John Malloy, Mike “Pinball” Clemons, Trustee Tiffany Ford, and Superintendents Jacqueline Spence and Mary Jane McNamara joined Keynote speaker Jemeni Gairey of G98.7FM, who kicked off the walk with words of inspiration

More than 600 graduating students paraded north along Sentinel Road into York University. The day’s highlights featured Emery Collegiate’s school band, the Westview Drummers, CW Jefferys’ Drumline, and Downsview’s dancers.  At York University, they were greeted by educators, community members, and well-wishers. The students were then presented with commemorative medallions recognizing their achievements and affirming the exciting prospect of the new challenges before them.  Dean Lorne Sossin of Osgoode Hall Law School brought greetings to the graduates and offered encouraging words of achievement and the hope of future partnerships and collaborations. Twelve bursaries were given to students for academic excellence, excellence in the arts and community service.

This annual event led by Itah Sadu, author and director of A Different Booklist Cultural Centreis organized by a committee of students, educators and community members all devoted to excellence in education. The Walk With Excellence celebrates the achievements of Toronto’s students, and the efforts of principals, teachers and community partners in a public demonstration of student achievement and success.
