At Whitney PS, mental health and wellness is an important issue all year long. Throughout the year, staff work with students to provide them with tools and a supportive environment for success. Particular times of the year, such as Children’s Mental Health Week, offer an opportunity for focussed attention in this important area. During this dedicated week earlier this spring, Whitney hosted its very first Healthy Living Conference, offering workshops such as yoga, nutrition, stress management, and more.

Students in grades 4 to 6 attended the conference for the full day that it was offered, while students in grades 1 to 3 attended the morning session. Students came away with a number of skills that will help them for years to come. One student appreciated learning how to manage stress with music and relaxation.  Another added that “there are two things I will do to keep a healthy mind and body: eating and drinking less sugar drinks.”

Prior to the event, teachers were asked to submit their favourite healthy recipe for inclusion in a healthy living conference cookbook. The book also included tips from presenters at the conference. At the end of the conference, students were presented with the book as a keepsake. Principal Debbie Stern’s pita pizzas is one of several recipes included in the book that is sure to become a household staple.
