The Toronto District School Board has named an Interim Director of Education to replace outgoing Director John Malloy, who is retiring from the TDSB.

During a Special Board Meeting this afternoon, Trustees unanimously approved the appointment of Carlene Jackson, who is currently the TDSB’s Associate Director, Business Operations and Service Excellence — a position she has held since August 2017. In this role she is responsible for providing leadership in all aspects of business including finance, internal audit, legal services, employee services, facilities and capital management, planning and transportation. Prior to joining the TDSB,  Carlene was the Chief Financial Officer at the Toronto Catholic District School Board.

Carlene has over 20 years of experience working in the public sector. In addition to the education sector, Carlene has worked in all three levels of government in senior leadership roles, including positions at the Ontario Ministry of Finance and the federal Treasury Board Secretariat.

Moving forward, the Board will commence a search process for a permanent Director of Education. Carlene will serve in this role until a permanent Director is installed.

Quick Facts

·       A Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA), Carlene Jackson also holds a Bachelor of Commerce and a Masters of Business Administration.

·       Her new role will be effective July 15, 2020.

“Carlene is an ideal selection for the appointment as she is currently leading the complex planning process for returning to school in September and she is the executive lead supporting the Board as it begins its budget process leading to the approval of the 2020-21 Board budget.”

- Robin Pilkey, Chair, TDSB

“I look forward to working with our Trustees, staff, parents, students, and partners to meet the needs of the city’s public schools — especially as we continue to navigate learning in the days of COVID-19.”
