Kayley Baker is a grade 12 TDSB student who attends R.H. King Academy located in the east end of the cityR.H. King Academy student - Kayley Baker near the Scarborough Bluffs.   Last Fall, Kayley found herself in an emergency situation when she was downtown with her grandmother.  As the pair were walking along the busy streets of Toronto, they noticed a crowd of people making a fuss. They made their way over and saw a man on the ground and he was blue in colour.  Kayley knew instantly something was wrong and that she had to do something to help him.

Her grandmother grabbed her backpack while she knelt down beside him to perform CPR.  She got up to 30 compressions before he started to make wheezing sounds. There were people standing around but nobody knew how to properly perform CPR.  Thankfully, Kayley knew how to perform CPR because she went through the Mikey Young At Heart App. Going through the videos and quizzes gave her the confidence to act immediately and without fear. She knew what to do and knew that if she tried to help by performing CPR, this man would have a better chance of survival.

Kayley is glad that she was able to help and felt that the CPR training she had in grade 9 physical education along with her lifeguard and the Mikey Network training gave her confidence to perform this act of heroism.

Kayley is an active member of the school’s Swim, Lacrosse and Field Hockey Teams and a leader in the King’s Emergency Response Council (First Aid Team). She is a qualified Lifeguard and assists with the School Swim Meets while working part time at Variety Village as a swim instructor. She enjoys swimming and camping and plans to study nursing in the Fall.
