Italian Heritage Month at the Toronto District School Board

Wednesday, June 1, 2022
Categories: News

Italian Heritage Month has been proudly recognized during the month of June at the Toronto District School Board since a motion was passed by the Board of Trustees on May 16, 2012. The Province of Ontario has also marked Italian Heritage Month as a result of Italian Heritage Month Act in 2010.

The Italian Heritage Act, 2010 states, "Ontario is home to more than 1,350,000 Italian Canadians. Since the 1880s, the Italian Canadian Community has made and continues to make significant contributions to the growth and prosperity of the Province of Ontario."

This year's theme for Italian Heritage Month is Buongiorno Italia! Keeping with this lens, to mark Italian Heritage Month at the TDSB during the month of June, the Italian Heritage Month Volunteer Planning Committee members have put together various ways to for students, staff and the TDSB community to learn about the Italian heritage.

Please view our PowerPoint on the Italian Heritage and watch a video from students and staff at Beverly Glen Junior Public School that brings this year's theme to life.

In addition to June being Italian Heritage Month, it is also Senior Month in Ontario. With the impact of the pandemic to seniors, the Italian Heritage Month Volunteer Planning Committee created Italian themed poster cards and students from Joyce Public School created their own messages for the 400+ seniors at Villa Colombo Homes for the Aged. A huge thank you to Principal Susan Billington, and Designated ECE, Ivette Orellana Zaccolo and all staff at Joyce Public Schools for their outstanding contribution.

Below are educational opportunities to further learn about the Italian heritage.
