HOLLYWOOD PUBLIC SCHOOL AND CHILD CARE

Addition, renovation, and Childcare at Hollywood Public School to respond to significant accommodation changes.

Overview

Project Address: 360 Hollywood Ave, North York, ON M4S 1H2

TDSB is renovating and building a new 2-wing, 6 classroom and 5-room childcare addition to address increased enrollment pressures in the Yonge-Sheppard area. The 2-wing addition will provide the school community permanent classroom spaces which will replace existing portables on site and provide additional childcare capacity for the area. The existing school will greatly benefit from the modernization of the overall facility and improved efficiencies in building systems. The project includes a new state-of-the-art gymnasium with stage, new parking lot, extended bus pick-up/drop-off, as well as extensive landscaping revisions complete with outdoor seating and activity areas to create a more enjoyable learning experience. In line with TDSB’s commitment to equitable and inclusive spaces, the building will be a fully barrier-free, accessible school with a new elevator.

Background

In March of 2018 the Ministry of Education (EDU) provided capital funding approval to construct a new 8-classroom addition to serve 487 pupil places at Hollywood Public School. The funding was to address the accommodation pressures in the Younge-Sheppard corridor which is designated as an “urban centre” in the City of Toronto’s official plan where high-density intensification is encouraged. The project was required to support attendance boundary changes between McKee PS, Avondale PS and Hollywood PS, that was required manage the projected growth in the area.

Through the design process it was found that existing rooms within the school could be utilized as classrooms and the addition/renovation scope was reduced to include 6 classrooms while increasing the final student capacity to 493. This was approved by the EDU in July of 2022.

Since the EDU approval of the business case TDSB has completed the “Site Plan Approval Process” (SPA), detailed design of the project, received “Approval to Proceed to Tender” (ATP) from the Ministry of Education, obtained building permits from the City of Toronto and tendered the construction to pre-qualified General Contractors.

Objectives

Once completed the school community will benefit from the following:

  • Flexibility within the facility to manage current and future enrollment pressures.
  • Permanent classroom spaces within the school and remove the need for portables.
  • Enhanced use of outdoor play areas by reinstating landscaping in areas occupied by portables.
  • Facility modernization through renovation of existing spaces and addition of new programmed spaces.
  • A fully accessible school with new elevator.
  • New affordable childcare that will provide economic opportunities for the community.
  • A state-of-the-art gymnasium/stage complete with new change rooms and warming kitchen.

Project Updates

Project has been tendered to General Contractors. Tendered cost for construction has come in over estimated construction cost. TDSB is currently seeking additional funding from the Ministry of Education to cover the project shortfall.
