Olympic Spirit K to 6 Student Writing Challenge

Until March 2010, students from Kindergarten to Grade 6 were challenged to capture what the spirit of the Olympics means to them in a piece of creative writing (short prose pieces, chants, raps and poetry). All entries are featured here, so we can all see the wonderful works from our students.

As spurs for creativity, Teachers were encouraged to access a great on-line resource. RBC has developed the Canadian Olympic School Program, available at http://www.olympicschool.ca/. This program has free downloadable lesson plans at all grade levels, along with interactive components and contests. It is designed to use the excitement of Olympic stories and issues to examine Olympic values such as leadership, excellence, respect and fairness.

Olympic Medals at the Hockey Hall of Fame

The Hockey Hall of Fame has the entire Olympic Medals collection on loan from The Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland. 137 medals from both Summer and Winter Olympic Games date as far back as 1896. This marks the only time such a collection has ever been available for viewing outside The Olympic Museum.

With the Olympics coming to Vancouver in February 2010, a trip to the Hockey Hall of Fame to view all the Olympic Medals dating back to their origin, could be a very interesting and highly educational experience for students, allowing them to view the historic nature of the Olympics both past and present. Olympic Torch Relay Activities

K to 12 Student Art Show

During November, we invited students from kindergarten to Grade 12 to create a piece of art that captures what the spirit of the Olympic Torch means to them. We asked school staff to select one piece to represent each school.

All submissions were featured on our Student Art Show Photo Gallery and 44 of them were selected to go on display in the rotunda at Toronto City Hall during the Olympic Torch week, from December 11th to 18th, 2009.

Thanks to our schools for the wonderful submissions!

Torch Bearers in the TDSB

Not only did the TDSB participate in Olympic Torch-themed art and writing challenges, we also had many of our own staff and students running in the relay!

One of the highlights was a group of 12 visually impaired teens and 4 of their teachers from the TDSB Vision Program who won a nation-wide competition to carry the torch. These students come from different schools across Toronto and their Torch run date was December 17th, in Markham. As part of their Torch Relay preparation, the Vision Program torchbearers also participated in a special ceremony – a “Torch Team Recognition Event", on November 10th.
