Trustee Daniel MacLean - Ward 2

Welcome to the Ward 2 webpage

Welcome, and thank you for visiting my Ward web page. Whether you are a student, parent or resident, as your elected representative for the TDSB, it is my role to advocate on your behalf. On the TDSB site, and on this page, you can stay informed on what’s happening at the Board, including policies under review, program updates and discussions around new initiatives to improve student success.

On this site, you can also learn more about ways you can get involved and participate in the education process, like attending Board meetings or checking out other volunteer opportunities. Education is a shared responsibility, and I welcome and encourage your participation in our public school system.

PIAC Members are elected parent volunteers who form an Advisory Committee of the TDSB. Each TDSB Ward has two PIAC Members, a Representative and an Alternate. Ward Representatives and Alternates are advocates who

  • provide information and advice on parent engagement to the TDSB;

  • communicate with and support school councils of schools; and

  • undertake activities to help parents of pupils of the board support their children's learning at home and at school.

The FSLCAC is comprised of parent representatives and alternates elected by each ward council, a parent co-chair elected by FSLCAC parent members, a trustee co-chair and designated TDSB staff. We meet every four to six weeks during the school year at the TDSB offices at 5050 Yonge St. The FSLCAC consults with and advises the Board on French as a Second Language matters and contributes to the work of trustees and staff. This partnership of trustees, staff and parents fosters excellence and growth in FSL programs at the Board.

Nominees for Ward 2 PIAC and FSLCAC

Sarah Ali : Would like to run for PIAC Ward 2 as I have experience in previously running for PIAC and will be then voice of parents and students in TDSB.

Frances Shawera : As a mother of 6, 5 of whom will attend Ward 2 schools I feel that my involvement in my children’s education and the importance we feel as a family would be an asset to PIAC. I currently sit on the Humber Valley Village school council as well as Co Chair Rosethorn parent council. Increasing parent engagement is a very positive way to enhance the education of our children. I actively take part in the two schools my children attend, Rosethorn and Humber Valley, by sitting on council, by being involved in fundraising efforts such as the Pumpkin Walk, and by facilitating parental interaction and communication amongst parents as well as through and to the schools. I hold a strong belief that as parents, by sharing in the involvement of our children's education, we produce a better environment and community for our children to flourish and learn. As a woman in the corporate business world with a background in corporate sales and as an active parent and community member, I feel that I would be a valuable asset with regard to identifying and reducing the barriers for parent engagement as well as having the skills to effectively and efficiently come up with strategies to improve student engagement. My passion lies with the education of our children and all children. It has been and will continue to be at the forefront of our family's values. Thank you for the consideration of this very important role and I look forward to any feedback or questions on any aspect of my nomination.

Doug Kwan : Doug Kwan has had both of his children enrolled in French Immersion when they entered SK and his son is continuing with his French studies at Hilltop middle school. He is the Chair of a parent group called Parents for a Closer French Immersion Middle School for Ward 2 which supported the creation of a middle school program that is closer to Broadacres and Millwood Junior Schools. He believes that when children can speak multiple languages (especially one of our official languages) that it opens opportunities and enhances their learning. He strongly believes that great communities start with engaged communities.
