School History

John Buchan, 1st Baron Tweedsmuir (1875 – 1940) was the 35th Governor General of Canada. He was a Scottish novelist, journalist, public servant and politician remembered for starting the Governor General's literary awards. His most memorable novel, The Thirty-Nine Steps, is significant not only as one of the first true espionage adventures but also as a record of social and political attitudes of the time. He travelled widely and spoke extensively, attempting to promote national unity and foster a distinctive national identity.
