Ionview Public School
Our School Improvement Plan
Literacy
Our teachers work collaboratively to set high expectations for students, use data and assessment to guide instruction and provide feedback for students. Teachers provide a Balanced Literacy Program (intertwining reading, writing, oral and media literacy skills) is delivered using the Gradual Release of Responsibility Model: teacher models (I do, you watch), teacher shares (I do, you help), teacher guides (you do, I help) and finally, student is working independently (you do, I watch). Guided reading groups are used to help the teachers support the learning needs of each student within a small group.
Numeracy
Math is everywhere and it can be a lot of fun! At Ionview, we strive to model a positive attitude towards math. Our focus this year is to establish a consistent approach to teaching math. Using a mentor text from Kindergarten to Grade 8, teachers provide students with opportunities to help them build their understanding of math concepts through hands-on activities and questioning strategies. Students will be challenged to apply their understanding to real-world problems and explain their thinking.
We will be embedding the use of technology to help students design and create using coding programs.
Families are invited to come out to our first Math Inquiry Night on March 8, 2018 @ 6:30 pm.
Pathways
Support is presently provided for our Grade 8 students to make informed choices on their high school options through our information meetings for Grade 8 to 9 in the fall, visits to local high schools and through our guidance counselor. Our goal will be to continue to provide information to our Grade 8 students and their families to make informed choices for course selection at high school. Students in Grades 7 and 8 are mentored through the transition process to high school with the support of our intermediate teachers and Area Guidance Teacher, Ms. Edwards.
Community, Culture & Caring
Ionview PS has a vibrant community with more than 20 languages spoken in our school. While many of our students have been born in Canada over half of them speak a second language at home. We have seen an increase of participation by families at Ionview PS events in the past years – concerts, fun fairs, literacy nights, workshops on report cards or parenting your teen and on our parent advisory council. Our goal is to continue to investigate ways to engage families in school life by offering one more community event and to ensure our activities are responsive to our local cultures.
