Goals

Charles Gordon Senior Public School

Our School Improvement Plan

Literacy

This year it is our goal to increase the number of students reaching the provincial standard in Reading and Writing.  Our teachers are focusing their efforts on a number of "high-yield" instructional strategies such as: Descriptive Feedback,Success Criteria and Anchor Charts.  Teachers are engaging students in the development of their own success criteria, critical thinking skills and  Inquiry in order to further the student's literacy skills.

Numeracy

This year it is our goal to increase student achievement in the strand of Numeracy Skills.  Mathematics teachers will be participating in Learning Networks professional development activities focusing on the use of the Three Part Lessons, Math Congresses, Gallery Walks and B.A.N.S.H.O. in order to facilitate the use of these strategies in the classroom.
The students will be working on using the strategies of math congresses, gallery walks and BANSHO to extend their mathematical thinking.

Pathways

This year we have two priorities in this area: easing the transition from Grade 6 to 7, and providing guidance to students in the transition from Grade 8 to 9.  Our guidance counsellor will be visiting classrooms and meeting with students and parents individually to ensure that students make appropriate course selections for Grade 9.

For our incoming students to Grade 7, the school will be hosting tours and information meetings to welcome students to the school.  We will also be meeting with feeder school staff to ensure that all students receive the support that they need right from the beginning of the year in Grade 7.

Community, Culture & Caring

Charles Gordon Sr. P.S. is a caring community where we are helping the students understand  the meaning of Citizenship. Ways that we are helping the students and staff develop a safe learning environment where all people are respected is through several initiatives within the school. We have a Gender Based Violence Prevention Team which is educating the student body on the importance of respecting all people regardless of gender, race, religion  or sexual orientation.
We also have our Beyond 3:30 program, which is helping our students develop leadership skills around nutritions, sports, and academics.
Overall the staff and students at Charles Gordon are working hard to make it a safe and caring environment.
