Goals

Baycrest Public School

Our School Improvement Plan

Literacy

Our SMART GOAL is to raise by 20% the number of Grade 3 students achieving Level 3 in literacy. We continue to concentrate on "Reading with Fluency", "Reading with Meaning", and "Topic Development" to strengthen our literacy instruction in all classrooms. This year, greater focus will be placed on Success Criteria and Descriptive Feedback in improving the literacy levels of all of our students. More attention to best practices in Guided Reading, Running Records tracking, and in Questioning during Reading for Meaning will occur. Model Cluster workshops will support the culturally responsive and reflective pedagogy. The school community will be more consistently reflected in the multilingual library and classroom reading selections.

Numeracy

Our SMART GOAL is to raise by 20% the number of Grade 3 students achieving Level 3 in literacy. We continue to focus on the math stands of "Number Sense and Numeration", "Measurement", and "Data Management and Probability". The Three-Part Lesson and Co-Teaching with the LC Math Coach will be incorporated in improving the numeracy levels of all of our students. Co-created Success Criteria will be utilized in the calculation and communication of student responses. Collaboration in best practices has resulted in more engaged math partnerships among teachers and with parents assisting their children. Texts and math manipulatives continue to be updated to make math both fun and the teaching practice with the Smartboards current.

Pathways

Our SMART GOAL is to increase by 5% the number of students in all grades, including students with IEP's and those who are ESL learners, who will achieve the provincial standard in Reading. We continue to place an emphasis on each student to think critically by listening, speaking, reading, writing, and communicating knowledge while exposed to a variety of rich texts. The number of "Reading Angel Volunteers" who read with individual students one-to-one each week has increased. Students practise their reading fluency and comprehension as both volunteers and teachers test the understanding of the "Big Idea" and Making Connections. In the process, both student schema and teacher questioning practice will be enhanced.

Community, Culture & Caring

Our SMART GOAL is to reduce by 20% the number of suspensions issued at Baycrest P.S. To this end, we have instituted such programs and practices as Ambassadors, Peer-Mediation, PALs, and Restorative Justice.
Another SMART GOAL is to implement two initiatives with a school and parent community partnership. As Model School in the heart of the community, we have planned Parent Engagement Evenings, ranging from a Family Fitness Night to the Toronto Family Services Workshops. School staff and support agencies will  continue to improve the general well-being of the community and foster a stronger partnership between our school and the home front in supporting student learning.
