Application & Placement

Please Note: While admission to the Early French Immersion (SK entry)/Junior Extended French (Grade 4 entry) program is guaranteed at the entry points to all on time applicants, admission to a specific school is not guaranteed if the school reaches capacity.

Please Note: At the November Board Meeting, the Board of Trustees approved to leave transportation status quo for the 2020-2021 school year. Therefore, there will be no service changes for transportation in K-8 in French Immersion/Extended French programs for the 2020-2021 school year.

Application Process

Please find below important information regarding the application process for all French Programs. Please also note that:

  • An offer of placement in French Immersion/Extended French programs is guaranteed to all eligible on-time applicants, however placement in a particular school is not guaranteed.
  • You must accept the placement by the deadline indicated by following the instructions in the offer sent to the email address provided.
  • Offers of placement are made based on the home address at the time of application. If your address changes between the time you accept the placement and the beginning of the school year, there is no guarantee that a space will be available in the new area school.

French Immersion

The application process for admission to Early French Immersion programs begins in November. It is an online application process. It is not a first-come, first-served process. Students apply to the program and not to a specific school. Learn more about the application process and the deadlines. All late applicants will be placed on a wait list.

The attendance area for an Early French Immersion program is created by a group of "associated" English feeder schools. To locate the Early French Immersion school in your area, you must first confirm the English school for your home address, then visit our French Immersion Location Finder.

Note: Attendance areas as well as associated feeder schools for Early French Immersion programs may be changed at any time in accordance with Board policy and procedures. Placement in an associated French Immersion school cannot be guaranteed if a school reaches capacity.

Junior Extended French

The application process for admission to Junior Extended French begins in January. It is an online application process. It is not a first-come, first-served process. Students apply to the program and not to a specific school. Learn more about the application process and deadlines. All late applicants will be placed on a wait list.

The attendance area for an Extended French school is created by "associated" English feeder schools. To locate the Junior Extended French school in your area, you must first confirm the English school for your home address, then visit our Extended French Location Finder.

Note: Attendance areas as well as associated feeder schools for Junior Extended French programs may be changed at any time in accordance with Board policy and procedures. Placement in an associated French Immersion school cannot be guaranteed if a school reaches capacity.

Optional Attendance

In the TDSB, students may access a program outside their French Immersion or Extended French catchment area by applying through Optional Attendance to register in that program. Parents may obtain an Optional Attendance application form at www.tdsb.on.ca/parents or from their local school and apply to the requested school for consideration.

  • Admission will be based on availability of space in the program.
  • No transportation is provided for students admitted under Optional Attendance.
  • Once admitted to a school, the student will have the right to complete the French Immersion/Extended French Program in the schools through the designated pathway for that school.
  • If a student changes residence (they may be moving out of the catchment area of the French Immersion or Extended school designated for their address) - where a change in address results in movement out of the designated catchment area, students must apply under Optional Attendance to continue in their current school. These admissions through Optional Attendance are automatically accepted; no transportation will be provided, consistent with the Optional Attendance Policy.

Late Admission

Last Date of Admission to Regular Entry Points

Subject to availability of space and the Ministry of Education class size requirements, the last date for admission to the regular entry points is as follows:

(i) Early Immersion (SK) - Last day of December classes

(ii) Middle Immersion (Grade 4) - September 30

(iii) Extended French (Grades 4, 6 and 7) - September 30

Admission from Other Jurisdictions

Students who move into TDSB may be placed in French Immersion or Extended French programs if they have been enrolled in equivalent French Immersion or Extended French programs in other school boards in Ontario.

For other jurisdictions or for students without an equivalent French as a Second Language background, students may apply consistent with the Late Admission Procedure.

Students from Francophone or private schools that offer equivalent French programs may apply to attend a French Immersion program if space is available.

Immersion to Extended at Intermediate and Secondary Levels

Students seeking admission from Immersion to Extended French are considered on a case by case basis by the principal in consultation with Central FSL Program staff.

Pathways

Each school offering Extended French or French Immersion in TDSB has a designated catchment area. Students from this area may apply to attend the program in their designated school. From elementary through secondary schools, receiving schools are identified and the elementary-intermediate-secondary schools for each catchment are defined as a pathway.

To change your child's pathway school, you will need to apply for the requested school through Optional Attendance.

Pathways are subject to change.
