Liam O'Donnell is the award-winning creator of nearly 40 graphic novels and books for reluctant readers, including Tank & Fizz, West Meadows Detectives and the Battle of Blocks adventure series set in Minecraft.
Liam is also an educator with the Toronto District School Board (currently on leave) who has taught in Kindergarten to Grade 8 classrooms. Liam brings an educator’s perspective to his writing, understanding the importance of using alternative literacies, including graphic novels and videogames, to stimulate a love for reading with children.
Liam recently completed a Masters of Early Childhood Studies at Ryerson University where he researched the impact of game-based learning on young children’s learning, with a particular focus on Minecraft. With the support of RE/Lab at Ryerson University, he also helped start GamingEdus.org to introduce teachers to the learning opportunities to explore in the classroom through Minecraft.
In addition to writing books, Liam has worked in the movie industry, developed educational radio plays for the BBC, written articles for adults and children, adapted TV scripts for Kids Can Press, and created original comics for A&C Black Publishers, Owl Magazine, Scholastic Canada, Stone Arch Books and Capstone Press. Volumes 1 & 2 of the Max Finder Mystery Collected Casebook Series received the Association of Educational Publishers Distinguished Achievement Award. Liam’s books have also been nominated for reading awards in Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia and in Ontario’s Forest of Reading program, with Tank & Fizz: The Case of the Slime Stampede most recently nominated for the 2016 Silver Birch Express Award.
