DENNIS AVENUE REPLACEMENT SCHOOL & CHILD CARE

Replacement of Dennis Avenue Community School with a new three-story school to respond to significant accommodation changes.

Project Address: 17 Dennis Ave, York, ON M6N 2T7

TDSB is constructing a new building to replace Dennis Avenue Community School and allow for consolidation of Cordella Junior Public School and Rockcliff Middle School in Toronto. The existing Dennis Avenue CS was demolished due to significant deterioration of the facility. The three-story new Dennis Avenue CS site not only provides students and families with a new, modern facility to enrich learning opportunities, but also provides the broader community with the opportunities a community hub can offer.. In addition to the classrooms, the project includes a 5-room childcare center, gymnasium, an art/multipurpose room, and a modern library. In line with TDSB’s commitment to equitable and inclusive spaces, the building will be a fully barrier-free, accessible school with a new elevator.

Background

In March of 2018, the Ministry of Education (EDU) approved the replacement elementary school at Dennis Avenue CS. The replacement of the aging facility at Dennis Avenue CS will accommodate 358 students from JK to Grade 8. Since the approval of the original business case, TDSB began the design process from hiring and engaging the consultants, up until receiving the permit and tendering the project in Fall 2022. During this process, TDSB was also working on receiving all the necessary approvals and permits to demolish the old Dennis Avenue CS, which was completed in Summer 2022.

Objectives

Once completed the school community will benefit from the following:

  • Flexibility within the facility to manage current and future enrollment pressures.
  • Opportunity to expand community-based activities in a functional brand-new building.
  • New state of the art learning environment for students and the larger community.
  • New affordable childcare that will provide economic opportunities for the community.
  • Enhanced use of outdoor play areas by reinstating landscaping in areas occupied by portables.
  • A fully accessible school with elevator.
  • New program spaces including gymnasium, a multipurpose room, a library, music room, and art room.
