School History
Claude Watson School for the Arts was established in 1981 by the former North York Board of Education as a specialized elementary arts school. Its origins date to planning undertaken in the late 1970s to provide students with opportunities for enriched learning through the arts alongside a comprehensive academic program.
The school was named in honour of Claude Watson (d. 1978), a former Associate Director of Education with the North York Board of Education.
Originally located on Spring Garden Avenue, the school developed a distinctive educational tradition integrating Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts with academic learning.
In 2006, Claude Watson School for the Arts moved to its current purpose-built facility, designed to support both academic instruction and specialized arts education.
For more than four decades, CWSA has provided generations of Toronto students with opportunities to develop their artistic talents, pursue academic excellence and contribute to a vibrant school community.
