Skills Ontario Secondary Cardboard Boat Challenge

Monday, December 31, 2018
Categories: Great Things

The Toronto District School Board was well represented at the 2018/19 Ontario Skills Secondary Cardboard Boat Challenge. This event is an excellent opportunity for students to showcase their creativity, teamwork and leadership. The TDSB had 9 out of 31 spots in this challenge. Most of our teams were competing in this challenge for the first time.

The challenge was to use two pieces of 4x8 cardboard and two rolls of duct tape to create a floating device that can sail across the swimming pool with one person inside. There is also a weight challenge that involves all team members entering the boat. This is always a highlight as teams try different scenarios to prevent their boat from sinking in the pool.

Northern Secondary finished in 7th place while most of our teams finished above 20th place. A special thank you to the nine teams that participated: Northern Secondary School (2 teams), L’Amoreaux CI (2 teams), John Polanyi CI (2 teams), Dr Norman Bethune CI (2 teams) and Parkdale CI (1 team). Parkdale CI won the overall team spirit award.

Thank you to the Experiential Learning Department for its support of our students and teachers in this initiative. We look forward to doing this challenge again next year and hope to have many more schools participate.
