Students from Ms. Kyrollos' Grade 3/4 class at Blacksmith Public School joined the City of Toronto for a special tree planting event at their neighbouring Elm Park to celebrate the Sugar Maple being named Toronto’s 2027 Tree of the Year.
The Sugar Maple was selected following the City’s first-ever Kids Vote Weekend, which saw more than 10,000 young voters cast ballots during advance voting for Toronto’s municipal election. The Sugar Maple received the most votes, with 4,549, earning its place as the city’s next Tree of the Year.
Known for its brilliant red, orange and yellow fall colours, the Sugar Maple is native to Toronto and plays an important role in the city’s urban forest.
Over 200 trees were planted at Elm Park with the help of Blacksmith students. The Tree of the Year initiative supports Toronto’s broader urban forestry goals, including planting up to 120,000 trees annually and achieving 40 per cent tree canopy cover by 2050.
