This year’s Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) results show significant progress across the Toronto District School Board (TDSB), with Grade 3 and 6 literacy and math seeing some of the largest increases in decades. In a school board as large and diverse as the TDSB, even a one or two percentage point increase represents meaningful growth and many more students achieving success.

In Grade 3 math and writing, the TDSB has seen the largest year-over-year increases in 20 years, increases of 5% and 5% respectively; while in Grade 3 reading, we’ve seen the largest year-over-year increase in a decade at 3%.

In Grade 6 math, the TDSB has seen the greatest year-over-year gains in the past 20 years (+3%). The proportion of students now reaching the provincial standard in math matches the 2016 level of performance, the highest over this period of time.

We’ve seen two consecutive years of more than a two-percentage point increase in Grade 6 reading. In Grade 6 reading and writing, the percentage of students reaching the provincial standard is the highest it has ever been in the past 25 years.

Grade 9 math results also increased by one percentage point, while strong literacy achievement is being sustained at the secondary level, with the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) success rate remaining stable at 85%.
These results show that targeted math and literacy efforts across the system, including additional math supports put in place by the Province under supervision, are having a meaningful impact on student achievement.
“We are very pleased with the significant gains we are seeing, in some cases the strongest results we have seen in many years, and I am grateful to our students, staff, families and partners for the work that has contributed to this progress,” said TDSB CEO Camillo Cipriano. “These results show what is possible in public education when we work together to give students the support and opportunities they need to succeed.”
