Central Tech Students Design Dog Houses for Constance Lake First Nation

Categories: News

This year, students at Central Technical School collaborated on a real-world community project in partnership with SPCA and Constance Lake First Nation. In the first semester, Andrew Zalewski's Construction class designed and built 7 custom, insulated dog houses. In the second semester, Annabel Fleming's Visual Arts class took on the role of mural designers.

Following a client-based design process, students virtually met with a community representative from Constance Lake First Nation to review the creative brief, learn about the community, and discuss artistic direction. They developed original design concepts, submitted them for client feedback and approval, and painted final murals onto the dog houses. They then wrote letters to the recipients. This interdisciplinary project gave students hands-on experience in communication, collaboration, research, design thinking, and community-responsive making.

The finished dog houses will be delivered to Constance Lake First Nation by SPCA, where they will be used by their dogs.

A row of dog houses that are decorated with colorful murals of nature scenes and animals sits lined up in front of students who stand behind the boxes proudly displaying their finished work. Two students sit on the ground beside a completed dog house painting a colorful and detailed mural.
