Eastview student plant Healing Garden. On May 27, students, staff, volunteers and community partners at Eastview Public School came together to plant 400 trees and shrubs in the school’s new Healing Forest.

Throughout the day, students enthusiastically participated in planting activities, learning firsthand about environmental stewardship, Indigenous teachings and the importance of caring for the land. The project marks another meaningful step in creating a vibrant outdoor learning space where students can connect with nature, wellness and community.

The City of Toronto generously donated all of the trees and shrubs, and the City's planting crew taught students and staff how to properly plant and care for them. Their guidance and support helped make the day both educational and memorable.

The school was joined by Nookomis Mokjiwun who shared important teachings about respecting nature and guided students in making Indigenous offerings and prayers to the trees that were planted. Her wisdom helped students understand the deep connection between people, the land and all living things. Thank you to the Indigenous staff members who supported Nookomis Mokjiwun throughout the day and helped create a meaningful learning experience for everyone involved.

The school is grateful to the Urban Indigenous Education Centre for generously providing a community barbecue lunch for students following the planting activities. Appreciation is also extended to TD Friends of the Environment, Tree Canada, Green Communities and the TDSB EcoSchools Sustainability Department for their guidance and ongoing support in helping bring the Healing Forest project to life. Recognition also goes to the dedicated teachers and staff who worked alongside students throughout the event and helped ensure the day ran smoothly, as well as the Toronto Police Service officers who joined the community to support and participate in this special event.

The tree planting event was focused on building community, learning together and creating a lasting legacy for future generations of Eastview students.
