Over the past month, students at JG Workman PS have been preparing for What Was My Backyard?, a musical performance created in collaboration with more than 20 professional artists from The Community Arts Guild and the choir from Garden Avenue PS.
Through workshops in singing, acting, dancing and puppetry, students explored Toronto’s Indigenous histories and ongoing Indigenous presence. Together, they imagined and learned about the land that existed long before today’s homes, playgrounds, parks, streets and backyards now stand, and reflected on how these histories continue to shape our lives today.
The project provided students with an opportunity to deepen their understanding through the arts while collaborating creatively with professional artists, educators and peers.
