Grade 5s Dive into Social Studies with Ontario Leaders

Categories: News

Grade 5 students at Perth Ave. have spent the past month immersed in politics as part of their Social Studies work on government and responsible citizenship.

Their learning began with a visit to the Ontario Legislative Assembly in late November. During the tour, students had the rare chance to meet their local MPP, Marit Stiles, who carved out time to speak with them about their hopes for their community and the issues that matter most to young people.

The momentum continued this December when the class welcomed former Premier of Ontario and former Ambassador to the United Nations, Bob Rae, along with his wife, Arlene. Mr. Rae offered students an engaging look inside his years in public office before shifting to his work at the UN and the global push toward the Sustainable Development Goals. Students arrived prepared with thoughtful questions and left energized by the conversation.

This learning now leads into their culminating task: writing to a current government official about a social or environmental issue they believe deserves attention. After a month of meeting leaders, exploring institutions, and sharpening their understanding of civic responsibility, the Grade 5s are eager to make their voices heard.
