Hillcrest CS partners to open new food bank

Categories: News

The Hillcrest Community Food Bank, which is part of the Daily Bread network, opened in October and the new food bank is a partnership between Hillcrest Christian Church and Hillcrest Community School.

The food bank is located in the church's basement and partially staffed by grade five and six classes from Hillcrest CS who volunteer once a week. Every Friday afternoon student volunteers stock shelves, take inventories and assist community members.

Student volunteers are also assisted by Educational Assistant/Student Nutrition Assistant, Kim Klug, to collect food, toiletries, egg carton and reusable bag donations on a daily basis. When it first opened, the food bank was serving 50 families weekly. That need has grown in the past month and now more than 200 families are served each week.

Grade 6 Teacher Jon Tilly and student Annie Love were interviewed about the partnership on CBC’s Metro Morning. Listen to CBC’s interview, Students at Hillcrest Community School volunteer at new food bank.
