Earlier this month, Westmount Junior School was transformed into a vibrant hub of energy, culture, and community as they hosted their very first Reggaecise event. For 2.5 hours, the gymnasium echoed with the infectious beats of the Caribbean, bringing a powerful start to our African Heritage (Black History Month) celebrations.
From the youngest learners in Kindergarten to leaders in Grade 5, the entire school participated with incredible enthusiasm. Led by the dynamic Kevin Carrington, students were immersed in a high-octane blend of dance and fitness.

The atmosphere was electric, but the true magic happened during the affirmation segments. Between high-energy dance sets, Kevin led the students in repeating powerful, positive affirmations. Seeing students stand tall, shouting words of self-worth and strength, was the highlight.
"The positive energy in the room was palpable," noted one of the staff members. "It wasn't just a workout; it was a joyful, engaging celebration of identity."
This event represents more than just a fun break from the classroom; it is a direct reflection of Westmount’s commitment to the TDSB Combatting Hate and Racism Policy. By centering Black joy and Caribbean culture through physical activity, we are actively fostering an inclusive environment where every student feels seen and celebrated.
We are so proud of how our students embraced this new experience. The smiles, the sweat, and the shared rhythms reminded us all of the strength found in our diversity.
