The TDSB is proud to recognize Greek Heritage Month during the month of March. This heritage is also celebrated across the Province of Ontario through the Hellenic Heritage Month Act, 2019. The Act notes that March is significant for the Hellenic community, with Greek Independence Day observed each year on March 25.
Proclaiming March as Hellenic Heritage Month provides an opportunity to remember, celebrate, and educate future generations about the achievements and contributions of Hellenic Canadians. This year marks the eleventh year of recognizing Greek Heritage Month at the TDSB. The theme for 2026 is:
Celebrating Identities: From Alpha to Omega
«Γιορτάζοντας Ταυτότητες: Από το Άλφα στο Ωμέγα»
To mark the month, several educational opportunities have been offered across the system. One highlight for Grade 6 students was “Making of Greektown,” a walking tour of Danforth Avenue presented in partnership with the Hellenic Heritage Foundation. This experience introduced students to the history and architecture of Greektown through a lively and engaging program.
The TDSB Greek Heritage Month Volunteer Planning Committee is pleased to share the winning images from this year’s Poster Contest, open to all students across the system. These posters are being delivered to schools for display throughout the month.
We welcome students, staff, families, and community members to join us at the following Greek Heritage Month events:
- Closing Ceremony on March 28 at the Greek Community of Toronto (30 Thorncliffe Park Drive) from 1:30 to 3 p.m.
- This celebration will feature music, dance, photo displays, and entertainment from TDSB students and community members. Light refreshments will be provided.
- Annual Greek Independence Day Parade on March 29 at 1 p.m., with the meeting place at Kapapamahchakwew – Wandering Spirit School (16 Phin Avenue).
Happy Greek Heritage Month from TDSB's Volunteer Planning Committee. We look forward to celebrating with everyone. OPA!
