February is African Heritage (Black History) Month. At the TDSB, a motion to recognize African Heritage (Black History) Month was carried in January 2002 and reaffirmed again in January 2004. The year 2026 marks 30 years of celebrating African Heritage Month in Canada. It has been recognized since 1996 through a motion introduced in the House of Commons by The Honourable Jean Augustine. 2026 also marks five years since the opening of TDSB’s Centre of Excellence for Black Student Achievement.
In celebration of African Heritage, the Centre of Excellence for Black Student Achievement is excited to offer diverse Caregiver and Community sessions in collaboration with community partners. These opportunities are designed to support Black families and families raising Black children with systems navigation, and deepening their engagement and advocacy for their children in TDSB schools.
In addition to the below opportunities, the African Heritage (Black History) Month Volunteer Planning Committee invites you to a Virtual Launch Celebration on February 2 from 10:45 to 11:30 a.m. Join the Microsoft Teams stream here
