Categories: News Releases

The Toronto District School Board is still in the early stages of its investigation into this week’s tragic drowning of Jeremiah Perry. We continue to support Jeremiah’s parents in any way we can, as well as the impacted students and staff.

As the Office of the Chief Coroner, together with Ontario Provincial Police, is now investigating the circumstances surrounding Jeremiah’s death and has formally requested information surrounding the trip to Algonquin Park, including swim test information for Jeremiah, we will not be commenting further on these specific circumstances at this time. We can confirm however that this excursion required that students pass a canoe trip swim test and canoe trip skills test to participate and that students who were unable to pass the tests were not to go on the trip.

For excursions of this nature, it is TDSB practice to follow safety guidelines as set by the Ontario Physical and Health Education Association. We are working to provide additional information, including the confirmation of completed swim tests and TDSB excursion safety procedures and measures, to the Office of the Chief Coroner and O.P.P.

Jeremiah’s parents, the school board, and the greater TDSB community deserve to know what happened and we will be cooperating fully with any investigation into this matter as we believe this information is in the public interest.
