The Grove Community School Wins Bike to School Week Award

Categories: Great Things, Happenings @ TDSB, School Web Stories

Last week, the Grove Community School received the Bike to School Week Award for the Toronto Region at the Smart Commute Awards. During Bike to School Week, an impressive 46.94 percent of the school population cycled to school – the highest reported percentage in the City of Toronto.

Building on the success of Bike Month, schools across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton area (GTHA) have been jointly celebrating Bike to School Week since 2015. Schools participate in Bike to School Week by encouraging their students to walk and roll to school, and by holding events both inside and outside the classroom to promote the benefits of active transportation.

To celebrate the week, the Grove Community School planned a number of activities including morning circle gatherings where staff shared cycling safety tips. Students were invited to share their own experiences by telling their favourite cycling stories.

Over the course of the week, 291 cycling trips were logged by students at the Grove Community School.

The Grove Community School is Toronto’s first public elementary school focused on environmental education, community activism and social justice.

Last year, Earl Haig PS also received the Bike to School Week Award.
