For the past 16 years, Lambton-Kingsway JMS has been a top fundraiser for The Terry Fox Foundation.  This past year alone the west-end school raised more than $21,000, surpassing all other public elementary schools in the province. To recognize all of the hard work of students and staff, and to honour their never-give up attitude, which is modelled after the iconic Canadian hero himself, Terry Fox’s older brother Fred visited the school recently to share in a special celebration assembly.

Under the leadership of teacher Colleen Gibson, the school with the big heart has raised an incredible $436,975 over the years.  Gibson and her team of Terry Fox Student Helpers have been involved in everything from organizing pledge sheets, sharing Terry Fox trivia on morning announcements, overseeing Terry Fox t-shirt and lemonade sales, developing school-wide incentives, and coordinating a Terry Fox Raffle.

Gibson, one of four teachers who developed the elementary lesson plans for The Terry Fox Foundation that are available on its website for teachers across the country to use, said that the annual event has become one of the most anticipated days of the school year, with everyone getting involved.  “On the day of the Terry Fox National Walk/Run, we have hundreds of family members join us,” she added. “Rain or shine, we walk in honour of Terry Fox, and all those who have been touched by cancer.”
