Occasional and Permanent Contract Teaching at the TDSB

The TDSB invites applications from qualified candidates to apply for the upcoming 2026-2027 school year, for consideration for our Elementary and/or Secondary Teaching Eligible to Hire (ETH) Lists and Occasional Teaching (OT).

What are the Occasional Teaching (OT) Opportunities at the TDSB

The TDSB hires Occasional Teachers (OT) to our OT roster based on system needs. Currently, we are hiring for the 2026/2027 school year.

NEW RECRUITMENT CHANGE: To be considered for employment as an Occasional Teacher you must successfully complete the Pre-Selection process.

This Pre-Selection process includes:

  • Initial screening of OCT qualifications
  • OT and/or ETH Interview
  • Reference check

If you successfully complete the Pre-Selection process, you will be considered for future employment as an Occasional Teacher.  Occasional Teaching job offers for the 2026/2027 school year will be made by September 2026. Pre-selected candidates must confirm their availability each month to remain eligible.

  • To apply for Elementary OT and/or the ETH List, you must have one of the Qualifications of Primary, Junior or Intermediate Divisions on your OCT.
  • To apply for Secondary OT List, you must have one of the Qualifications of Intermediate and Senior Divisions on your OCT. In order to apply for the Secondary ETH List, you must have both Intermediate and Senior Qualifications on your OCT.

NOTE: Those candidates who have qualifications in the priority teaching areas (i.e. French, Special Education, Technology/Trades, Indigenous) may be fast tracked through the pre-selection process

Once you been offered and accepted employment for the 26/27 OT roster, candidates may be offered the following types of assignments:

  • Daily Occasional Teacher
Day-to-day assignments replacing an absent teacher
  • Long-Term Occasional (LTO) Assignments
    Longer-term placements filling extended absences

Daily Occasional Pay Rates (Effective September 1, 2025)

(Elementary – ETFO | Secondary – OSSTF)

  • 0–100 days worked: $289.52 per day (ETFO) $286.28 (OSSTF)
  • Over 100 days worked: $299.05 per day

How do I become Eligible for a Permanent Contract Teacher Position

If you are successfully hired as an Occasional Teacher you will also have the choice, at the time of hire, to be added to the Eligible to Hire (ETH) List.

The ETH list qualifies you to apply for permanent contract teaching positions at the TDSB which are posted directly to this list. You do not have to be an Occasional Teacher to be on the ETH list. You can indicate this preference at time of hire.

Note: If you are an Elementary Occasional Teacher with French qualifications you will need to pass both the oral and written French fluency tests to be added to the ETH list.

Compensation for contract teaching roles will be outlined in individual job postings and will align with the applicable collective agreement.

Qualifications

    • Candidates in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers are preferred. For those who do not have a teaching degree, in certain circumstances the Board may apply to the Ministry of Education for a Letter of Permission in order to meet its programming needs.

NOTE: It is the applicant’s responsibility to provide a valid and accurate Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) number. Errors or discrepancies may result in the application being disqualified from the selection process. Please ensure that the names you provide on your application match your names on the OCT Registry
