Students and Seniors Connect for Biography Writing

Categories: News

Students at Weston Memorial JPS have been busy this past month drafting questionnaires, conducting interviews, and writing detailed biographies for their neighbours, senior residents at Central King Seniors Residence. As a sign of their appreciation for this personal project, residents will present students with “Budding Authors” awards.

Teacher Nancy Lynch called it, “the most authentic writing project” she has ever coordinated for students, which resulted in wonderful conversations and learning for everyone involved, “What started as a writing task has turned into a social gathering, a history lesson, a communications lesson, and a wonderful community building activity.”

Weston Memorial has partnered with the Seniors Residence in the past, often entertaining residents with school concerts. This writing project has sparked the development of more student-senior bonding-learning activities, including plans for students to host an internet tips session in the coming weeks.
