Letter re: Ventilation Information

Dear Parents, Guardians and Caregivers,

Over the past two years, the TDSB has focused on several areas to improve ventilation in schools and keep students and staff healthy. To ensure you are aware of the efforts, the Ministry of Education has asked that all school boards share the school-specific ventilation improvement measures taken. You can find them all here, on our public ventilation website. (Once the spreadsheet is open, please select the “School Dashboard” tab at the bottom and select your school from the dropdown menu)

As a reminder, some of the measures we have taken include:

  • Investing more than $165 million (funded through School Condition Improvement grant and the Covid-19 Resilience Infrastructure funding, received at the end of February 2020).

  • Installing more than 16,000 HEPA units in TDSB schools in every occupied classroom.

  • Increasing the frequency of changing filters in existing mechanical systems.

  • Prioritizing repairs for mechanical systems to ensure they are operating efficiently.

  • Adjusting the operating schedules for all mechanical systems to maximize air flow, increase fresh air intake and increase the amount of air exchanges per day in the building.

  • Setting the systems to run at maximum outside airflow before school starts and after it ends to refresh the air before arrival and remove remaining particles at the end of the day.

  • Encouraging schools to open windows for short periods of time throughout the day to increase ventilation and bring in natural fresh air.

We continue to take action to improve ventilation in our schools and will continue to update you as necessary.

Thank you.
