In the fall of every year, schools review actual student enrolment
compared to
the
initial projections from last year, and reorganize classes where required. We do our best to plan for the new school year,
but there are always factors, such as new or departing students, that might
affect how classrooms are organized — leaving some larger than they
should be or smaller than they should be. This year,
in addition to these factors, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact
enrolment and the allocation of staff across the school board.
During reorganization, our goal is to lower class sizes system-wide
to comply with
Ministry
of Education regulations and collective agreement
requirements, while also addressing very large and very small classes.
When reorganizing classes in a school, we always try to limit disruption for
students and staff as much as possible. We also know
that for students and parents/guardians, changing classes may be difficult and
may require an adjustment period. Students will be supported as they transition
through these classroom changes.
In some cases, the reorganization process requires the establishment of new
cohorts. We have consulted with Toronto Public Health and are taking the
following measures to ensure the health and safety of students and staff:
- TDSB Student Information
Services is keeping track of all cohort changes and will provide this
information to Toronto Public Health to conduct efficient contact tracing, should there be a
confirmed case of COVID-19 in the class
- Enhanced cleaning prior to
the classroom changes taking place
- Continue to ensure mask/face
coverings, physical distancing, handwashing/sanitizing, and daily school
and classroom cleaning
The reorganization process is currently
underway in TDSB schools and will be completed by October 29, 2021. The
majority of impacted students and their families have already been contacted.
